Anxiety as a Guidance System

Anxiety isn’t the problem. It’s the signal that you’re looking at your life through fear instead of truth.

Growing up, I was surrounded by deep dysfunction within my family and my immediate circle. This environment kept me in a state of constant distress, forcing me into a survival mode that lasted through my childhood and adolescence. By the age of 15, I was living independently, finding the world to be a confusing and overwhelming place. Without a guidance system, I often felt depressed and anxious, though I didn’t have those words at the time. I simply felt broken, as if I were failing at being human.

A New Pathway

I knew there had to be a better way, but I didn't know how to change my path until I decided to go to university. It was my way out—a chance to move to a new city, access funding for housing and food, and start again. However, I didn't leave my past behind; I brought anxiety with me like an uninvited houseguest who refused to leave, a presence I simply couldn't shake no matter how much I tried to start over.

It was during my time at university that I first sought counselling. A wise soul helped me realize that my anxiety wasn't a sign that my fears were true, but rather a part of my internal guidance system. I used to believe that the physical sensations of anxiety, the tightness in my chest, the "sucker punch" feeling in my belly, the heaviness and depletion, were evidence that I was a failure or a disappointment.

The Sucker Punch Truth: Understanding the Nervous System

What I learned is that the nervous system is simply responding to the nature of the thoughts we hold. When we loop negative thoughts and add sensory input like visuals, memories, and sounds, our amygdala (the primitive "fear center" of the brain) receives a signal that we are in danger.

Because this part of the brain is primitive, it cannot distinguish between a real threat and a thought we are making up and reinforcing. It responds as if a saber-toothed tiger is chasing us, redirecting energy to our muscles for fight or flight, causing our hearts to race and our stomachs to flip. Anxiety isn't a reflection of reality; it’s a signal that you are holding a fearful thought.

Shifting Your Lenses: Fear vs. Love

In my teaching, I call this wearing our "Fear Lenses." Everything is neutral until we put on a certain set of lenses to look through and interpret the world.

  • The Fear Lens: Heavy denser feelings like guilt, shame, resentment, and worry. 
  • The Love & Trust Lens: A cultivated state of safety, connection, and peace, including feelings like self-compassion, love, joy, as well as, states of being or perspectives like curiousity, belief in oneself, possibility, growth mindset.

 

As I began to heal, I became more aware of the fearful thoughts I had collected from others over time that were stored in my subconscious, body, and energy field. This was a process of awareness, identifying them, releasing from mind-body-spirit, and consciously choosing to cultivate a Love-based perspective. Both lenses are available to us, however, one feels way better than the other and guides us forward instead of keeping us stuck. My work now is teaching others how to shift from their Fear Lenses to their Love and Trust Lenses in real-time. Because our biological default is to look for threats, cultivating "Love Lenses" is a skill we must consciously learn and practice.

A Path Forward

Healing wasn't about making the anxiety disappear; it was about learning to read the signal, take off the Fear Lenses, and choose a different view. As I continue to navigate this journey, I’ve realized that healing isn't about the absence of anxiety, it’s about the presence of a new understanding.
